Mont St Michel
On a small rocky island that’s surrounded by the waters of the English Channel, about 1 km from the north coast of France at Normandy, sits the Mont St Michel, a medevial Benedictine Abbey and church. Legend has it that the abbey was built after the Archangel Michael appeart to Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, instructing him to build a church on the rocky islet. When Aubert ignored his instructions, the story goes, Michael burned a hole in his skull, thus inspiring him to start the construction of the edifice.

During the time of the French Revolution, the abbey on Mont St. Michel was converted to a prison. Then later, influential figures like Victor Hugo and others campaigned to restore the Mont St. Michel as a national treasure. In 1874, the Mont St Michel was declared an historic monument. Currently, it is open for visitors and sees hundreds of thousands of visitors a year to witness this rich architectural treasure.

Omaha Beach
Aptly named ‘Bloody Omaha’, Omaha Beach, in Normandy, was covered in anti-tank and anti-landing craft obstacles. The allied air bombardment had been largely ineffective and, as history has shown, little went to plan. The American Memorial at St. Laurent and the Omaha Beach Museum bear witness to this. This is the only battlefield in history where troops had to run towards enemy fire to reach cover. The visitor center is designed to complement and broaden the experiene of visiting the American cemetary in Normandy by paying tribute to the values embodied by the sacrifice of American and Allied soldiers.

Utah Beach
Originally, a code name for the Normandy beaches during the D-Day invasion, Utah Beach stands as a monument to the American and Allied forces successful attempt to establish a landing zone, in order to move in the military in their subsequent push toward Cherbourg. Currently, Utah Beach is home to a museum and popular for historical tours in the area, that provide an up close view of what it was like for the American and Allied soldiers who so courageously fought for freedom.

Barfleur
Barfleur, a fishing village with small houses and a rich history, is one of them most charming villages in France. This town is worth visiting for travelers to Europe and France who enjoy exploring, photography, and learning about history.

Barfleur was the Anglo-Norman Kingdom’s leading port in the middle ages. A large medallion fixed to a rock in the harbor marks the embargination point of William the Conquerors fleet before the battle of Hastings in 1066.

In medevial times shipwrecks were common. In 1120, the white ship sank off Barfleur. Prince William, sole legitimate son of King Henry I, drowned, precipitating a succession crisis. In 1169, King Henry II had embargued at Barfleur after an inspection of his Norman fortresses and narrowly escaped drowning after his ship sunk during a storm. In his entourage was Henry D’ Aigneaux, an ancestor, referred to as ‘the most noble of the Barons of England’. Today, the lighthouse of Gatteville, the third largest in the world, offers comfort to sea mariners as does the oldest lifeboat station in France.

Barfleur is a quaint fishing port dominated by the church of Saint nicholas and is lined with grey granite houses with terra-cotta tiled roofs, elegant chimneys and underscored by attic ‘eyelid’ windows.

You can visit the medevial courthouse of Saint Catherine, the house of Saint Marie Madeline Postel, and the Augustine Gardens.

Chosen as one of the prettiest villages in France, Barfleur is frozen in time and encapsulates much of what people love about Normandy. It certainly inspired artist Paul Signac who developed the neo-impressionist pointilist style.

Barfleur is a short drive from the chateau Isle Marie.

Carteret
Cartaret beach is considered as one of the finest beaches in Normandy. Located on the Western Coast of the Cotentin peninsula, south of Cherbourg, Carteret is a charming resort and fishing port and marina with some 300 moorings. The Carteret Cape is the last of the large cpes of the Corentin, opposite the channel islands of Jersey. On a clear day, the cliffs become a real balcony to view the Anglo-Norman Islands.

The West Coast of the Cotentin peninsula has a salty, Atlantic coast feel to it with sand dunes dotted with wild flowers and a long ribbon of clear sandy beaches empty but for a handful of sand-yacht enthusiasts. A line of green hills hosts church steeples, medevial churches, wind mills and the Rue der Ormes where schooner captains had built their opulent homes–ideal for a day trip and bucket-and-spade beach holiday.

Sant-Saveur-Le VicomteSaint Saveur, birthplace of Barbey d’ Aurevilly, is on the way to Cartenet and boasts a castle which dates from the 11th and 12th centuries when a feudal motte of the Norman barons was built here.

The Saint Saveur Chateau and the Isle-Marie Castle were the two important strategic medevial chateaux in Normandy that provided a fortress protection against the English during the 100 Years War.

The ancient fortress with massivve 14th century towers and an imposing keep still stands. The city walls were breached by cannon during a siege and is believed to be among the first sucessful uses of guns against city walls in history.

St Sauveur would have been the final battle scene shown in Spielberg’s ‘Saving Private Ryan’, based on the Niland brothers, if it had been based on fact and not fiction.

HoutfleurCity of painters and the cradle of impressionism. The sea walk bordered with beautifully maintained public gardens makes a pleasant walk along the mouth of the Seine. The wooden bell tower of the chcurch of Saint Catherine is the largest church made out of wood in France. Hourfleur is one of the most picturesque ports in France and certainly an option for lunch on your way to the chateau.
