Wayne Dyer—an Insightful Review

Wayne Dyer is an international figure in the field of public speaking and self-development. He’s also a world-renowned author—with over 30 books to his credit. Wayne has also produced countless audio and video programs and appeared on thousands of radio and television programs.

His best-selling books include “Change Your Thoughts—Change Your Life,” “Manifest Your Destiny,” “The Power of Intention,” and “Wisdom of the Ages,” all of which have featured as National Public Television Specials.

Born May 10, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, Wayne Dyer holds a doctorate degree in Educational counseling from Wayne State University. He is also an associate professor at St. John’s University in New York.
Dr. Dyer set out to pursue an academic career, publishing his articles in journals while at the same time running a private therapy practice.

But it turned out that his lectures on positive thinking and motivational speaking techniques often attracted audiences way beyond the classroom.

A literary agent then persuaded Dr. Wayne Dyer to package the ideas he was teaching in a book form. His first book, “Your Erroneous Zones” was not particularly a hit.

But Wayne Dyer quit his teaching practice nonetheless and devoted more time to public speaking and motivational writing. He made numerous bookstore appearances and media interviews during his wide-ranging publicity tour of the United States.

Soon, his books began to make best-seller lists, which led to many national television talk show appearances. Dr. Dyer followed that up with even more lecture tours, production of audiotapes, as well as regular issuance of new books.  Soon, Wayne Dyer became a household name across the continental United States and elsewhere.

One factor that accounted for the wide acceptance of Wayne Dyer’s works was the fact that, unlike most writers of his day, his programs were not strictly tailored to the needs of corporations or those in the business world.  Emphasizing general wellbeing and overall success, his books easily resonated with a cross section of the population.

Dyer frequently drew anecdotes from family life—his own and that of others (did I tell you he grew up in an orphanage and was later raised by foster parents?). His status as a self-made surely added to the appeal of his message.

Wayne Dyer is a strong believer in self-actualization. He went as far as calling attention to the life of the Bible Character, Jesus Christ, whom he described as the foremost example of a self-actualized person. He urged his students to imitate the life of Jesus who preached self-reliance.

Dyer criticizes the modern society’s focus on guilt-feeling, which he sees as demobilizing and unhealthy. Inordinate feelings of guilt, to him, prevent a person from improving the present due to events in the past. I agree with Dr. Dyer that besides learning whatever we can from whatever happened in the past, the past should often be allowed to remain there—in the past. Else, it could become very distracting.

Fondly called the “father of motivation” by his teeming fans, Wayne Dyer remains till this day a source of inspiration and guidance for many admirers cutting across different age groups.  At the moment, Dr. Dyer lives with his family in his retirement home in the state of Hawaii.

As a writer and speaker, he may no longer be as prolific as he was some decades back (due largely to advancing age), but his works remain as relevant today as they were when they were first written.
